CME – The Importance of Rigorous Continuing Medical Education

CME or Continuing Medical Education is a way for those in the medical field to continue their education and maintain, if not exceed, their competencies as a professional. Also, CME aims to keep medical professional up-to-date with latest developments and upcoming technologies in their specific fields. Activities under CME widely vary – from written publications to online discussion. The content of all the programs and activities conducted for the sake of CME are developed and reviewed by faculty members who are masters in their clinical areas. Generally speaking, the content of CME is a body of skills and knowledge recognized and accepted by professionals as necessary to improve health care delivery to the public.

Needless to say, CME is extremely important to you, if you want – as a medical professional – to continually provide good quality care to your patients. If there is one known fact by human beings, it is that “change is inevitable.” Medications that were believed to be effective before may no longer work today; in the same way that illnesses that were incurable before may easily be remedied with an aspirin. Continuous and rigorous CME will make sure that you are not left out in this ever-changing world of medicine.

If you think that only physicians are required to take CME, you are sadly mistaken and misinformed. Everyone in the medical field – from the physicians to nurses – is encouraged to undergo CME. Bear in mind that patients are cared for by a team of health care professionals; a “team” and not a single physician. No one in the medical field can stand on his or her own. For the team to work as a well-oiled machine, each member must be up to date on all the advances in his or her profession.

There are a lot of sources for CME. This can come as a managerial course if you are to take on more managerial tasks; when a staff nurse becomes a head nurse, for example. CME can also be achieved in attending seminars or workshops discussing a new device that can cure or treat diseases. In fact, it can be as simple as reading published research in the most recent issue of a medical journal. The possibilities are limitless if you are open to learning new things.

Aside from the fact that you undeniably gain more knowledge and skills regarding your profession through continuing medical education, this is also necessary in the maintenance of your certification as a professional. It does not matter if you are a nurse, anesthesiologists, or a physical therapist, everyone will be required to meet specific standards in order to maintain his or her certification; and one of those requirements is CME.

I believe, however, that the most important benefit a professional can gain from CME is the increased confidence in ensuring patient’s welfare and safety. I know how many risks we, medical professionals, face every day. No matter how much we try to carry out our responsibilities as flawlessly as possible, there will be moments wherein we will be hindered by our human limitations. However, by staying on top of your CME requirements, you can decrease that risks substantially.

Some may complain that CME conferences, seminars, and papers eat up some of their free time, and some courses can be quite expensive; however, as a medical professional, it is our duty to stay up-to-date in order to ensure quality patient care in the 21st Century.

The Absolute Importance Of Continuing Medical Education For Doctors

Doctors are the key link between you and your health, an integral ingredient in the continued well-being of our civilization. When you get right down to it, our doctors are the only thing standing between us and the end of the world as we know it. No, that’s not as melodramatic as it might sound. Bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi outnumber us a few billion to one. They’re everywhere. They’re more adaptable. They’re more ruthless. They don’t understand that tipping the balance of nature isn’t going to end the way they want it to.

They do all this to humanity way before chronic diseases like diabetes and the deterioration of age step in. Our doctors are our knights in shining armor, the first line of defense between us and the bad particles abounding on this earth – unseen particles of doom lurk everywhere and we can’t fight them. New health nemesis are popping up everywhere in the world on a daily basis. That being the case, it is of the essence that our doctors be informed, armed and ready to do battle. The means to this crucial strategic plan is continuing medical education.

What is Continuing Medical Education Anyway?

Those in the field of medicine are intimately aware of the challenges and the critical need for continuing their medical education. If you do not know about continuing education, you better be darn sure that your doctor does.

When you are looking for a doctor to look after your health, you will probably not select the one right out of medical school. You want a doctor with experience treating all sorts of diseases and conditions – one who has forgotten more than the newcomer will know in 20 years of practice.

The field of medicine is changing every day. New drugs regularly come onto the market. New cutting edge technologies can ease ailments that 50 years ago no one even knew existed, let alone have a treatment for it. A doctor who graduated 30 or 40 years ago wouldn’t know any of this. The lack of keeping up with his medical education may cause him to make some drastically wrong treatment decisions.

What Continuing Medical Education Will Do

A doctor must never stop learning. They cannot afford to. They never know when a discovery will come out of a research lab or a remote village somewhere in the world that could be the answer to a longer life with a better quality than ever before. This enhanced quality of daily life may apply to any or all of the patients who walk into their doctor’s office every day. The ideal situation would be for doctors to have the time to read medical journals, attend conferences and symposiums to stay on top of changes.

Then there’s reality. The one where most physicians work a ten to twelve hour day between patients and paperwork. Where they regularly miss meals and school events. Where what little free time they get is spent with their family, or, you know, sleeping. Despite their best intentions, continuing medical education can get pushed to the back burner.

That’s why the AMA requires physicians to complete a certain number of continuing medical education hours each year to maintain their license. That way, you know that your doctor has the tools they need to offer you and your family the treatment options you need to stay healthy, and physicians can sleep soundly knowing that they have the tools they need to stay ahead of the silent but deadly killers stalking our streets.

Offerings of a Medical Education Training Campus

A Medical Education Training Campus gives students the opportunity to support this country by being part of the world’s most advanced military healthcare staff. The campus unites service men and women from different parts of the armed forces. This gives them the chance to receive the necessary military medical training to advance their careers.

At METC, students can pursue training in various medical fields. They can study nutrition and diet therapy or try for a degree related to dental services, nursing, diagnostic services, healthcare support, or any public health services. The credit that students earn at these places can be simply transferred to other learning institutions. Also, all of the degrees that are offered within this category will give students all that they need to obtain a civilian job in these fields. Since METC is geared at training members of the military, their training may be a bit different from the normal training that is given at conventional schools for healthcare.

For example, students will learn how to execute medical missions. This gives them the skills that are necessary to finish activities like giving immunizations, ordering medical supplies, and getting patients to safer areas. It is important to remember that those who provide military healthcare must treat patients in many different categories including civilians, service members, coalition partners, and enemies. All of these individuals must be treated equally. Every student is trained in the ways that they must respond in various scenarios. In the big picture, METC graduates provide medical care that is very similar to the care given by other healthcare providers. The only thing that is different is the settings that they work in. Therefore, students at the Medical Education Training Campus learns how to work specifically in hostile conditions they may occur during uncertain times.

Sometimes members of various parts of the military may need different skills. For example, an Army medic should know how to move patients on ships during times of evacuation. Navy Corpsmen should know how to load casualties onto a MEDEVAC. Throughout training at METC, students are taught basic evacuation steps that are not stressed at normal civilian medical schools.

Even though there are differences between civilian schools and METC institutions, military personnel receive top training. In many instances their training is even more intense than hose of other institutions. METC has pride that they pass down high standards that help them stay on the cutting edge of medical teaching. They are always dealing with changes in the field and predict changes before they occur.

To keep abreast of trends in medical technology, METC administrators partake in workshops and seminars with those in the top of the public medical health system. This lets METC improve the curriculum that they offer.

Students who enroll at the Medical Education Training Campus are guaranteed that they will get top education that uses state of the art technology. This school is well equipped with the newest tools in all of the areas it is involved with. For example, classrooms all have notebook computers, smart boards, and black boards to teach material clearly to all students. Individuals who are planning to partake in field training will have access to tough notebook computers that have been made exactly for this purpose. During study, these students know that their dorms are filled with CAC enabled computers. When they can not attend class, they can get training online. If questions arise, they have a live chat option to request help. Students can view podcasts of lectures as well.

Students at the Medical Education Training Campus will receive a degree in many different medical areas. This degree will give them the needed skills which will support the healthcare needs of those in the military. It also provides the necessary skills to pursue a career in the civilian world.

Corporate Health and Wellness Program Help – Free Resources and Information

Whether you are a Human Resources HR Manager for a large company, Non-Profit organization, a small business owner or somewhere in between, there are many so many benefits to both the employer and the employee for providing health and wellness education. Promoting a total-health culture that improves employee health, job performance and morale.

Studies show that unscheduled absences can cost employers $3,600 a year per hourly employee. Plus, when employees are at work but not fully productive due to chronic conditions, such as diabetes, can potentially cost employers another two or three dollars for every dollar they spend on direct medical costs.

Bottom line, having healthier employees can produce higher Productivity, less sick leave, increased morale and Positive Attitudes.

There are many ways to create an effective work force health program, but the most successful programs share several important elements including leadership first. A program has a much better chance of success if your company’s owner or CEO is onboard and leading by example.

To maximize participation, you can involve employees in designing your program. You could conduct a short survey to find out your employees’ interests. They’ll tell you what’s important to them.

You may also want to set-up a program that works on many levels. For example, your program should support individual employees in achieving their personal goals. A weight loss challenge supported by training, material and resources to support their efforts and increase personal successes. Your company policies should encourage physical activity in the workplace for example; provide healthy food choices in your cafeteria and vending machines.

Your program doesn’t need to be expensive. Another example can be a walking program. It is cheap and easy to do, and it can do wonders for employee camaraderie and teamwork. Just remember to offer something for every fitness level. Something for employees who are fit and healthy and want to stay that way, to those who want to change their lifestyle.

Communication and motivation are also critical. If you want your employees to participate, you need to get the word out, consider increasing visibility by creating a name and a logo for the program, and you can celebrate successes with your employees in a variety of ways, including e-mails and newsletters.

Finally, make sure you understand what you want your program to accomplish, and then set appropriate goals, such as the number of participants or behavior improvements. It may take time to start your work force health program, but it’s an investment that will pay dividends.

Choosing the Right Websites for Health and Medical Information

Use of internet has increased rapidly over the last few years. This has affected people in many ways, both good and bad. And medical and health fields are no exception. In fact, more people search for health and medical information than any other subjects. This just indicates that people take their health seriously and are ever searching for information to improve their health and well-being. But for many of us, even logging into an internet site is often daunting. We get lost with the volumes of information, advertisements, and promotions which are all eye-catching and very difficult to resist. This may lure readers to sites which are neither useful nor serve any purpose. Besides, the information may be loaded with medical jargons, terminologies, and other medical ideas which are hard to understand as a non-medical person.

So, how do we get the right information? And how do we know which one is right when there are piles and layers of information to choose from? To make the matter worse, the information are often contradicting or even misleading.

In this article, I will briefly highlight some important points that can help readers in choosing the right health and medical information from the internet. I urge the readers to ask the following questions in analysing a medical website, and the answers they get can determine the quality of information on the website.

Website ownership

Is the website owned by the government, educational institutions or private companies? In general, most websites owned by government are not biased and are promoted in the interest of the public. Majority of privately or company owned websites are developed for promoting products for sale or for other vested interest.

Author

Who is the author of the site? Is the author a doctor, medical scientist, health professional or any expert in health and medical field? Or is he/she a patient who has suffered an incurable condition for a long time, such as, multiple sclerosis patient or cancer survivor? Is the author a well-known figure or has he/she published any other credible articles or books? The information on the website will be more authoritative if the author does not have any personal interest or the site is not sponsored by commercial organizations. Also the site that has the contact details of author or publisher gives more weight to the site than those which do not have such information.

Website content

Is the content up-to-date? When was it last updated? Does the content show references to other authoritative sources? Is the information evidence-based? Is the language clear or is it loaded with medical jargons, terminologies or other ideas hard to understand? People love to read articles which are easy to understand and written in plain layman’s language. Simple demonstration or easy to understand diagrams and charts help people understand health and medical terms better.

Does the website promote holistic approach to health?

This is an important factor in choosing the right website for health and medical information. The site should provide complete and in depth information on the subject of interest. For example, if a website is about breast cancer, the readers should be able to get answers to questions such as:

What is breast cancer?
Is there a cause of breast cancer?
What are the risk factors for breast cancer?
Does it run in family?
How is it diagnosed and treated?
What happens if a patient refuses treatment?
Does the site give information on complications of treatment or follow up schedule?
Does it give information on any alternative modes of treatment?
What about prevention and screening for breast cancer?
Does the site address other issues related to breast cancer including psychological and sexuality issues, family and financial hardships etc?

Does the site provide links to other sources of information for help and support?

For example, a website on “Quit Smoking’ should have Quitline telephone numbers, counselling services for smokers, or contact details of health professionals involved in quit smoking programs.

Is the information specific to a country or a region?

Many websites provide information that is relevant to a particular country or region and are not tailored to the international readers. So, obtaining such information from a website which is country or region-specific may not be relevant or accurate. For example, immunization schedules differ between countries, level of health care services and types of treatment differ, and even drugs usage differs. It is therefore important to identify whether the information on the internet is for readers in a particular geographic area or country or it can be used internationally.
